Research Criteria
Senate Standing Committees are required to deliver clear, concrete results to ensure the sustainability of the Society. There is a need to choose research programmes selectively, to avoid overburdening and loss of focus.
In general terms, Senate Standing Committees are responsible to the Senate for identifying and keeping it up to date on activities, events and issues related to its mandate. In addition the Committees serve as subject matter experts within their area of responsibility to guide the strategic direction of the Society.
The following criteria are set out to form a basis for the Committees' programmes:
1. Those activities, issues and events that are having having a dramatic impact on human security.
2. That information which will both start to deliver visible results quickly and help lay the ground for the Society's long-term sustainability.
3. Work should concentrate on those areas where there is a perception - real or imagined, that there are significant shortfalls within a Committee's area of expertise.

Our logo is symbolic of the conjoining of two equal forces - SECURITAS - the Latin word for security, and NOUS - intelligence is perhaps the closest English word. Like the better relationships, each force reinforces the other. We believe that this marriage is necessary to meet the needs of a world that has become more globalized, complex and chaotic.
