The Senate’s activities are centered around seven committees.
- Intelligence
- Security Sector
- Human Security
- Illicit Trade In Weapons, Humans, and Drugs
- Transnational Organized Crime
- Violence and Victims
- Corruption
Standing Committees have eleven Senate members including a Vice Provost who is the Chair. Senate committees may choose to invite Society members to serve as a non-voting member, on its subcommittees, ad hoc committees, working groups, task forces or other bodies, on an ad hoc or continuing basis. It is the responsibility of the Standing Committee and its Regular Members to vet prospective members. A simple majority vote of the Standing Committee is required to appoint non-members.
In order to ensure a level of expertise and familiarity with committee work, terms of office on all Senate standing committees shall be two years.
Standing Committees are responsible for drafting terms of references and seeking approval through the Research and Development Steering Group. Standing Committees shall also:
- exercise the powers and perform the duties and functions that are assigned to it by the Senate
- provide focus for planning and priorities consistent with the Senate’s vision and mission
- strike necessary task forces and prior to the formation thereof appoint a chair and prescribe the composition and terms of reference for such task forces as may be deemed appropriate
- strike necessary ad hoc committees and prior to the formation thereof prescribe the composition and terms of reference for such ad hoc committees as may be deemed appropriate
- generate and receive reports monitoring progress in reaching goals as per the annual
- elicit future requests for funds and coordinate and report to Secretariat the source and disposition of such funds
